Thulisile Madonsela

Prior to ALI, Thulisile Madonsela was the Public Protector of South Africa, and was the first woman to hold this position. Ms. Madonsela is a human rights lawyer and authority on equality; she helped South Africa’s Constitutional Assembly draft the country’s constitution, and co-developed the policy framework that formed the basis of the establishment of her country’s Ministry for Women, Children and Persons with Disability.

As an ALI Fellow, she hopes to explore new ways for legal systems to promote social justice and eradicate poverty, both in her native South Africa and globally.
