Advanced Leadership Initiative at Harvard University

Welcome

The goal of the Advanced Leadership Fellowship is to prepare experienced leaders to transition from their primary income-earning years to community and public service for their next years of life. The Fellowship is designed to enhance and leverage the skills of already-accomplished leaders for maximum impact on significant social problems, including those that affect health and welfare, children and the environment.

In January of 2009, a select group of Harvard Advanced Leadership Fellows embarked on a flexible, enriching, pioneering year of preparation to jump-start their next career service. The plan is to begin a new Fellowship year in January of 2010.

Fellows have structured opportunities to exchange ideas with peers and faculty as well as flexible, individualized opportunities to work toward their own goals. They have the chance to mentor students, lead study groups, and sit in on relevant courses throughout the University, with their spouses/partners as desired. They meet and advise leaders grappling with major social and global problems and will learn the state of the art. They travel on guided field immersion trips and enrich their connections all over the world.

The year leads toward development and refinement of the Fellows' plans for their next stage work: starting a foundation, a campaign for a cause, a social enterprise, or public office with the potential for big impact on a major social problem.

In the Fall of the Fellowship year, each Fellow (or team of Fellows) will present their plans to faculty, Fellows, philanthropists and activists.

Network membership will continue beyond the Fellowship year, with Fellows able to join events and solicit support as they execute their plan.
