FAQs

What is required to be considered for an Advanced Leadership Initiative Fellowship?

Candidates for the ALI Fellowship are asked to submit the required initial information at "Introduce Yourself" and attach a current CV.

What if I do not know precisely what my area of interest may be?

ALI Fellows are not expected to have a fully developed idea of their post-fellowship project when they enter the program. Through the Core Course and course audits, ALI Fellows define and develop their post-fellowship project, pathway, or portfolio. ALI Fellows are focused explicitly on development through independent study, research, or work with student teams.

What is the cost of the ALI Fellowship program?

The ALI program fee is commensurate with a year of graduate study at Harvard University. Financial assistance is available only for those fellows joining the program after spending the entirety of their careers in public service capacities, defined as working in government, nonprofit, or military service.

Are there fees outside of the Fellowship program fee that I will be responsible for?

ALI Fellows will be responsible for the cost of any books or materials related to their specific course audits and any school or service-related fees such as parking.

How many days per week will I be in residence at Harvard?

To fully benefit from the program and contribute to their cohort, ALI Fellows are required to be in residence during the first semester (from August through December) and the second semester (January through May).

Will Advanced Leadership Initiative Partners have the same access to program activities?

ALI Partners are invited to attend all Advanced Leadership Initiative sponsored events such as organized dinners, Deep Dives/intensive immersions, and the Core Course. ALI Partners may also audit courses, with the instructor's permission. ALI Partners do not present a project; however, many have collaborated with their accompanying ALI Fellow in advancing his or her work.

Does Harvard provide housing while I am a Fellow?

Following an invitation to join the ALI Fellowship, you will be connected with Harvard Real Estate Services who have worked closely with previous ALI Fellows to help them find appropriate housing. The cost of housing and living expenses will be borne by the ALI Fellow.

Will there be parking available for ALI Fellows?

For ALI Fellows who may be commuting during periods of their Fellowship, the Advanced Leadership Initiative will provide information on parking options. The cost of parking will be paid by the ALI Fellow.

Will I have a Harvard ID card?

ALI Fellows will be provided with a Harvard identification card to access libraries and many of the resources of the Harvard community. ALI Partners will be provided with a Harvard-affiliated ID, as well.

Will I be able to access Harvard facilities such as libraries and gymnasiums as a Fellow?

With your Harvard ID, you will be permitted to access various Harvard athletic facilities. There may be separate fees (borne by the ALI Fellow) for the use of certain facilities.
